 New cervical cancer guidelines

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) released new guidelines for cervical cancer screening on March 14, 2012. New recommendations were also recently released by a multi-disciplinary group from the American Cancer Society, American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, and the American Society for Clinical Pathology. The recommendations made by both groups are based on available scientific evidence and are made without regard to financial considerations.

DOH Advisory Regarding Herpes Risk From Ritual Circumcision

DOH is undertaking an educational effort on the risks of neonatal herpes transmission from certain forms of ritual circumcision. We are sending letters to maternity hospitals, doctors (pediatricians, family practitioners, OBs) as well as to leaders in the Hasidic community and mohels who perform circumcisions.

DOH has developed two brochures, available in English and Yiddish. The letter to hospitals and doctors asks them to share the patient brochure (Before the Bris) with their patients considering circumcision. It recommends against ritual circumcision where the mohel uses oral suction to remove blood from the circumcised penis, and recommends parents discuss this with the mohel. The letter to Rabbis asks for their help in educating their communities.

The other brochure (Bris Milah) is for mohels. It advises against this practice, but provides suggested steps that may reduce the risk of transmission should the procedure still be performed.

An order form for the brochures will be placed on the DOH public web site. PDFs of the brochures will be posted on the Health Provider Network.
