DOH Authorizes Flu Vaccine Shipments to Family Physicians
Representatives of the NYSDOH advised the Academy November 24th that the Department has changed its policy regarding distribution of flu vaccine in response to concerns and recommendations by the Academy. Effective immediately, DOH will arrange for a minimal amount of h1n1 vaccine to be shipped to every family physician who has properly ordered vaccine (outside of New York City).
Any members who do not receive vaccine this week, please tell us at fp@nysafp.org, and call 1-800-kid-shot.
The week of November 30th, DOH will get vaccine out to internists. Large practices that have already received minimal amounts of vaccine will receive more product beginning the week of December 7th. DOH will establish a web site to check the status of orders and to provide an online process for placing orders.
Flumist is readily available. Physicians who order Flumist will receive vaccine faster if they order this product. DOH reports that there has been no pattern of side effects yet noted by the vaccine adverse event reporting system.
No large retail stores are receiving h1n1 vaccine.
NYSDOH indicated today they have distributed 1.4 million doses of H1N1 vaccine to date.
NYSDOH indicated today they have distributed 1.4 million doses of H1N1 vaccine to date. Special emphasis during the next week will be to get some vaccine to every family physician who has not received vaccine to date. Some family physicians who did not receive vaccine did not actually complete the order process. If you did not call 1-800-kid-shot, you have not ordered. Family physicians who did not self identify as such on the pre-order on line form may not be recognized by specialty, and may fail to receive priority vaccine because of this.
If you are a family physician outside of the 5 boroughs of NYC who ordered by phone, preregistered as a family physician, and receive no vaccine November 23 or 24th, please contact us at fp@nysafp.org, and call 1-800-kid-shot. NYSDOH is placing an order with CDC today for this purpose. If CDC provides what is requested by NYSDOH, you will receive vaccine.

NYSAFP Continues to Represent FP’s in Flu Crisis
NYSAFP Advocacy Commission chairman Phillip Kaplan, MD, and EVP Vito Grasso met with DOH officials and representatives of other medical societies on November 10th for another in a continuing series of regular meetings regarding the ongoing flu epidemic.
DOH reported that NY has received 1.3 million of the 7 million doses ordered by NY prescribers. We further learned that 40% of NY physicians who have ordered vaccine have received some supply. The Academy has recommended that some vaccine be distributed to every practice before large amounts of vaccine are distributed to any particular site. Those who ordered pre-filled syringes will receive multi-dose vials because they are available, saving physicians the need to amend their order in response to the supply.
Nationwide there are 246,000 courses of pediatric Tamiflu suspension, 3.6% of which are available to NYS. Pharmacies can learn to compound the suspension from capsules.
The AAFP website has a triage protocol for phone management of influenza like illness. You may view it at http://www.aafp.org/.
Watch for further updates on this site and via email from the Academy.
