Nominations for Family Doctor of the Year

It is time once again to nominate persons from the New York State Chapter for “Family Doctor of the Year”

Any family physician in the state of New York may be nominated by his/her peers, patients, family, friends, or by himself/herself.  Nominees must be licensed to practice in the state and must be a member of the New York State Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Nominees are evaluated on the basis of length of time in practice, Board Certification/Recertification by the American Board of Family Medicine, Fellowship in the American Academy, as well as area of practice, whether academic or clinical.  Other factors considered include both who nominated the physician and the number of nominations received for that individual.  Past or present office in the New York State Chapter is also given consideration, as well as activities as a preceptor, resident training, publications, and clinical research.

In addition, strong consideration is given to community service, activities in the state medical societies and professional associations, and public service.  Family, religious, and philanthropic activities are also given credit in the selection process.

After all of this information is received about the various nominees, a Committee of the Board of Directors will review the information and select the Family Doctor of the Year for New York State.  This individual is also then nominated by the New York State Academy for the American Academy of Family Physicians’ Family Doctor of the Year Award.

NOMINATION LETTERS SHOULD BE SENT TO VITO F. GRASSO, MPA, CAE, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT, BY NOVEMBER 20th, 2011.

AAFP Recruiting Practices for Smoking Cessation Pilot

The AAFP is recruiting 50 family medicine practices for a pilot project that will train Office Champions to implement system changes that integrate tobacco cessation activities into daily office routines.

The program will educate Office Champions through an online training module, live teleconferences, and a practice manual. The Office Champions will be required to submit an implementation plan to the AAFP and track and report results.

Practices that complete the program will receive $3,500 to cover administrative costs, plus a recognition kit with materials to be used to communicate their success, including a press release, certificates, posters, an article for patient newsletters, and electronic "Tobacco Treatment Excellence" logos. Participating offices will also be recognized in an advertisement in American Family Physician, in materials distributed at the AAFP Scientific Assembly, and on the AAFP web site.

The deadline to apply is August 16, 2010. Participating sites will be announced in September, and project implementation and evaluation will take place from October 2010 through May 2011.

Apply and get more information at www.askandact.org/officechampion or http://www.aafp.org/online/en/home/clinical/publichealth/tobacco/officechampions.html

CAP PC - Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for Primary Care

A new project designed to strengthen and integrate the relationship between primary care and child psychiatry has been launched by the University at Buffalo's Department of Psychiatry. This multi-site project, funded for two years by the NYS Office of Mental Health, offers family physicians an opportunity to:

    * Receive CME training from the REACH Institute so that you can better recognize, assess, and manage mental health problems in children and adolescents.
    * Access project child/adolescent psychiatrists for phone and face-to-face consultation support five days a week from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
    * Provide a project case manager to assist with linkage and referral to specialty child mental health services.

Ten family physicians and 10 pediatricians in each of five areas of the state will be chosen to attend a three-day dynamic workshop, led by Peter Jensen, MD and a group of internationally renowned medical teachers. There is no cost for the participating family physicians and pediatricians. The intensive training consists of interactive, active learning techniques and will be followed up for 6 months with twice monthly phone conferences. For more information on the project at any of the sites on the dates listed below, see: http://thereachinstitute.org or contact the person listed for that site.

From the desk of Governor David Patterson

My Fellow New Yorkers,
I am writing to you today to let you know about a new temporary statewide insurance option for uninsured legal residents who have medical conditions.  This new plan, called the NY Bridge Plan, is New York’s version of the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan that was created under federal health care reform.
